Types of Dog Leashes

A dog collar necessarily requires a leash for everyday uses. Amongst different types of dog supplies, you need to know which type of leash is best suited to your requirements. With dog fashion at its peak, it won’t be a wonder if you find more than these basic leashes. The following are the basic leads or dog leash styles that dog owners all over the world use –

  • Standard Leash – These are the simple, no hassle kinds and are most commonly used. The typical length is 4-8 feet but that also depends on the size of your dog. A six feet length is considered to be just fine. These leashes are available in leather and nylon but other fancy materials can also be found in the market. If your dog chews on the leash, then you should go for a chain leash instead of the fabric one.
  • Adjustable Leashes – These are similar in purpose to standard leashes but they are much more practical and easy to use. This is because these can be adjusted for the desired length. You can make use of the multiple loops and clasps and get the right length depending upon your training. Never tether your dog to a tree or pole for a long time and leave him unattended.
  • Retractable Leashes – Retractable leashes are best if you like your dog to wander off but still want him to stay on the leash. These are typically 25-26 feet long and made of nylon. They have a locking mechanism for any length, similar to a measuring tape. Even though these leashes are useful, they can be life threatening to a dog. He might get tangled in the leash, if you let him wander off your sight. The leash might get tangled in itself and it will be quite a task to get it untangled. Also, you must not use it if your dog isn’t well trained because then it will take your retractable leash to be permission to pull whenever he pleases.
  • Martingale Leashes – You must have seen these at dog shows. These are multipurpose leashes. They are used for toy breed, primarily and are a little costlier, as compared to the normal leashes we have discussed. They consist of a collar which slides down the dog’s head and a leash with a tube to keep the collar in place and tighten it when necessary.

Apart from this, there are bungee leashes which reduce the amount of jerks you get due to pulling. They maintain the tension throughout. There are also some hands-free leashes available in the market, one end of which you can strap to your waist. Remember to research a little about the best type of leash given the size of your dog. Invest in a good quality leash so that it does not harm the pet’s neck.
